REVIEW: THE CRAZIES

ABOVE: Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell
26th February 2010

By Alan Frank

Too many remakes suck. But not this one. Thanks to a smart script and Breck Eisner’s nerve-scraping direction, this truly terrifying revamp of George “The Night Of The Living Dead” Romero’s 1973 zombie shocker should scare you shirtless.

After the unlikely song We’ll Meet Again, The Crazies grabs you by the throat and drags you into a scary and eerie living nightmare. It’s set in a small rural American town where people start turning into killer zombies after drinking polluted water.

The movie begins with a gun-toting man invading a baseball game (at the sadly ill-named Tiger Stadium) to be shot dead by sheriff Timothy Olyphant, and rapidly escalates into mounting suspense and horror as the gory dead rise and the army moves in.

Olyphant and his doctor wife Radha Mitchell have to fight the legions of zombies as well as soldiers who try to cart them off, WW2 Nazi style, in a bid to suppress the creepy catastrophe. A superb remake with a truly chilling climax.

VERDICT: 8/10
