STEVE BRUCE JOB IS SAFE AT SUNDERLAND

ABOVE: Steve Bruce's job is safe at Sunderland
12th March 2010

By Ian Murtagh

STEVE Bruce has been told his job is safe – even if Sunderland are relegated. Chairman niall Quinn last night went beyond handing his manager a vote of confidence by announcing Bruce will definitely be staying at the Stadium of Light, no matter what happens

The 4-0 victory over Bolton, ending an alarming run of 14 league games without a win, has lifted the Black Cats to 13th place, six points clear of the drop zone.

Quinn’s belief in Bruce was not shaken by the recent slump.

And not only is he convinced Tuesday’s much-improved performance will spark a revival, he believes the geordie is the right man to transform Sunderland into an established top 10 side.

“Even if we do not win another game this season, Steve Bruce will be manager next year,” said Quinn.

“We hit an awful blip and we’re still not out of the woods but he knows what this club is about.

“He shares the same passion as the fans, myself and the owner and we feel he is the man to get this club where it wants to be.”

Quinn revealed every player signed in the past two years, including big earners like Darren Bent, Lorik Cana and Lee Cattermole have contract clauses which would mean a 40 per cent wage cut in the event of relegation.
